For the first time ever, Elderhostel is having lecture classes at Brooksby Village for people who live there. Elderhostel, which is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing extraordinary learning adventures for people 55 and older, will normally run day trips to see shows like the Nutcracker. But thanks to a new pilot program, the performances are now coming to Brooksby.
“This has been a very exciting partnership for us,” said Mary Landry, Brooksby’s community resources coordinator. “People who live here really enjoyed the first program so I’m sure more will attend the second Elderhostel event.”
A real treat
Phillip and Marjorie Snodgrass attended the performance. Being big fans of Elderhostel this on-campus performance was a real treat.
“We had been to Elderhostels before, in Indiana, overseas, and in various other places—and they were always great. When we saw an advertisement for Elderhostels one day downtown we went to the Boston Conservatory for a one-day program on Franz Schubert and it was marvelous,” says Phillip.
‘Elderhostel would come to us’
“It’s difficult to go downtown, dealing with traffic and finding parking. We did it, but it was ten times more convenient to have the program come here. We were really quite thrilled that Elderhostel would come to us,” adds Phillip.
The Boston Conservatory came to Brooksby, with several musicians and a professor. The first program about Mozart and his works drew more than 60 people who live at Brooksby. Those who attended listened to a lecture about his life and music and then attended a private concert performed by students from the Boston Conservatory.
