February calendar is filled with ways to celebrate diversity month

PEABODY, MA – February is diversity month and Brooksby Village’s calendar features a month full of events celebrating diversity.

 

“We want to offer a wide range of interesting, challenging, entertaining, informative programs during February with an overriding goal of improving our residents' and staff's understanding, and encouraging their acknowledgement of differences in people, thereby hoping to increase their comfort with differences in others,” said Elise Bernstein, senior resident services manager at Brooksby Village. “We want to help those who live here deepen their level of communication and connection with others who share life in this wonderful community.”

  • February 1: Champions showcase with a display of storyboards created by and about staff and residents.
  • February 2:  International buffet by Brooksby Village chefs, a fundraiser for the Benevolent Care Fund
  • February 3: Hearts Day to decorate our trees at Renaissance Gardens and McIntosh Clubhouse
  • Week of February 5: Brooksby Film Festival, daily at 1 p.m.
  • February 12: Chaplain Anna Smulowitz and pianist present "Yiddish Music and Culture"
  • February 13: "Coming to America,” a panel of Brooksby staff and residents will compare their experiences as immigrants
  • February 16: “YIKES! How did They Get in Here?" by Nelda Quigley and Elise Bernstein, discussing human reactions and building community
  • February 21: Salsa dancing demonstration by dining services students
  • February 23: Discussion of “The Color of Water,” book of the month, led by Helen Sondrol

There will also be a number of other diversity events featuring off-campus guests and performers, including:

 

  • February 1: Book fair by Barnes & Noble
  • February 8: The Dancing Church of Africa (DVD), with Rev Thomas A Kane, CSP
  • February 13: Dr, David Kolb, presented by the Parkinson's Group
  • February 15: Immigrant Theatre Group performance and audience discussion
  • February 16: "Retiring the Champ" by Judith Black, storyteller about care giving for someone with Alzheimer's
  • February 19: Low Vision Equipment Fair, with Andrea Schein, MA Commission for the Blind
  • February 22: Elder Hostel presents "Building Bridges to Islam"
  • February 26: Hearing Loss Equipment Fair, Tom Budrow, Verizon
  • February 28: "O'er the Field" with Tobin Elkian, Celtic music with fiddles

Located in a secluded 90-acre valley next to the 230-acre Brooksby Farm, Brooksby Village is home to more than 1,700 people. (Dani G. Baldassare)
