Quiroga family eliminates the hassles of holiday travel

Irma Quiroga and her family have a long standing tradition to spend Christmas Eve together. And that tradition certainly didn’t stop when she moved to Brooksby. In fact, Brooksby is the perfect place for families during the holidays.

The Bureau of Transportation says that the Christmas/New Year holiday is the second biggest travel time of the year behind the Thanksgiving holiday. Over 23% of people travel more than 50 miles to visit friends and family.

For the Quiroga family, this tradition goes way back. “Every Christmas Eve for 18 years the whole family would come to our home when we lived in Salem. And even in Bolivia, Christmas Eve was always a time that you spend with the closest members of your family,” says Irma.

Single floor living
Like so many other people, Irma and her husband moved to Brooksby because they were no longer willing to take care of their large condo. Heating and cleaning rooms that never get used and a lengthening list of things that need repair can cause anyone to rethink their living arrangement.

By moving to Brooksby, Irma said goodbye to those hassles and said hello to the convenience of single-floorliving. In her condo in Salem, Irma had to climb stairs just to go to the bathroom. Now her bathroom, kitchen, and washer and dryer are never more than a few steps away. She also is no longer heating, cooling, and cleaning rooms she never uses.

Continuing the tradition
For the past three years, Irma and her family have reserved one of Brooksby’s private dining rooms on Christmas Eve. This unique location is tailor-made for a family get together and it didn’t take long for Irma and her family to realize this.

“One of the good things about having our dinner at Brooksby is that we can all relax and enjoy the meal. In years past, Mom was busy with preparation and serving. More recently in Salem, it was my sisters and I who took care of the work. Brooksby now allows all of us to enjoy visiting,” says Irma’s daughter, Elvira Johnson.

Every year, Irma’s three daughters, who live close by, and her son from California along with many grandchildren come to Brooksby. The room is decorated and the celebration begins in the early afternoon. “We spend a wonderful evening together and have great food. We always order extra wine and it goes until twelve or one in the morning. We enjoy it very much,” says Irma.

“The tradition is so strong that as the grandchildren marry, they never miss the Christmas Eve get-together. After dinner, we go back to the apartment and say some prayers at the Crèche and exchange holiday wishes and gifts,” finishes Elvira.

When Irma is not planning her holiday party she’s busy enjoying Brooksby’s dynamic social atmosphere. “I go to several exercise classes including the aerobics class, and I volunteer at Renaissance Gardens three days a week,” says Irma.
