Pies and Lamb Are a Few Items on Joan Bardwell’s Menu

"I eat at the restaurants mostly," says Joan Bardwell, speaking of the five on-site restaurants at Brooksby Village. But when it is time to cook, Joan has the perfect place to do it—in the spacious kitchen of her Jackson floor plan design.

"I looked at the Jackson and knew it would be perfect. That was one of the main reasons why we picked the Jackson, for its kitchen," says Joan.

Eat-in Kitchen
The Jackson, which is an extra-large, two-bedroom, two-bath floor plan, has a coveted corner location with double exposure in the great room and kitchen. The open floor plan with a large great room is perfect for entertaining, and as Joan can attest, has a spacious eat-in kitchen that is tailor-made for those who enjoy cooking.

Joan and her husband were two of the "pioneers" of Brooksby, moving in July of 2000. The care-free lifestyle has afforded Joan more opportunity and freedom. Joan doesn’t have to cook; she cooks when she wants to.

Time With Family
"I have lunch almost every day here. cook on the weekends and holidays. I have a son who lives in another town; he comes and visits us almost every weekend. So I always cook dinner on Saturday nights and breakfast on Sunday morning," adds Joan.

"There are other times, too. We have two other sons who come on occasion and we are always together for the holidays," says Joan.

It’s Very Convenient’
Most holiday dinners are pretty standard. On Thanksgiving, Joan cooks a turkey, and for Christmas and Easter, she makes lamb. "Everything is close together. It's very convenient with the microwave and the dishwasher. The stove is in a convenient spot and there’s a lot of shelf space," says Joan. "There’s lot of working room. I use my table for rolling out pie dough," she adds.

Joan does like to branch out on occasion and try new things to test her culinary skills. "I like to get recipes from other people or from restaurants," says Joan. "Then I try to make them."

Joan’s Cooking Show
When Joan isn’t cooking in her kitchen she’s cooking on her very own TV show called Basic Cooking 101. The show is hosted by Joan and Windsor restaurant steward John Zavaglia and is produced and directed by the people who live at Brooksby in the on-site TV studio.

During the half-hour show, Joan shares a recipe, usually a dish for breakfast or lunch because most people will eat dinner at one of Brooksby’s various restaurants. John helps Joan, provides nutritional information, and features a recipe of his own.

Joan also works in the library; teaches exercise classes in Renaissance Gardens, and has just hit her 2,000th visit to the Fitness Center.  "I'm very busy", says Joan.

“It was absolutely a smart decision moving to Brooksby. We looked for five years and all I saw was condos and townhouses, things I didn’t like. We love just having one floor. I don’t miss going up and down the stairs all day. I've been thrilled.”
