The Treasure Chests at Oak Crest and Brooksby Village mark milestone birthdays

Posted on Tuesday, October 17, 2006

PARKVILLE, MD – Last week was a big week for The Treasure Chest, stores found at several Erickson communities that resell goods donated by residents and staff. At Oak Crest, the Treasure Chest celebrated its tenth birthday on October 10, while at Brooksby Village, the Treasure Chest marked its fifth year in operation.

At Oak Crest, The Treasure Chest is open Thursdays and Saturday to staff, residents, and the general public, and sells furniture, clothing, housewares, and almost anything else that’s donated. There are 90 residents volunteers that run the store, and all proceeds go back to the Oak Crest community.

In its ten years of existence, the Oak Crest Treasure Chest has donated more than $500,000, which has benefited every area of campus life, including general services, administration, security, Renaissance Gardens, Renaissance Terrace, gift planning, pastoral ministries and the concert committee. In addition, the store also regularly donates surplus items to the Salvation Army, and has supported campus fundraising efforts such as the 2005 Erickson-wide Hurricane Katrina fundraiser.

To celebrate the Treasure Chest’s decade of service, Oak Crest’s community resources department teamed up with the Treasure Chest board members to plan a birthday party that was held last week. All residents and staff members were invited, and many special guests joined in the celebration.

Executive Director Ann Walsh presented the Treasure Chest with a plaque that read “Happy 10th Birthday! You truly are our treasure.” Resident Life Director Nancy Barzack said that “T.C.” meant more to her than Treasure Chest; it also meant “tremendous charity.” Community Resources Manager Diana Brooks, expressed her “gratitude for all they do everyday for our community.”

Senator Kathy Klausmeyer, who is a frequent shopper at the Treasure Chest, was a surprise guest to the event. She came to honor Oak Crest Treasure Chest founder Irene Eaton with a citation from the State of Maryland for outstanding charitable work. Having Senator Klausmeyer make time in her busy schedule to come to this event was the icing on the cake for many of those being acknowledged.

The volunteers who work at the Treasure Chest received a charm shaped like a treasure chest as a symbol of their dedication. The 10 Treasure Chest board members, who decide how the money raised will be used to give back to the community, received the same charm along with a charm shaped like a key. The room was decorated with balloons and posters, and there was a giant sheet cake along with mini cupcakes and punch for the guests.

To celebrate the five-year anniversary of the Treasure Chest at Brooksby Village, the 75 volunteers who have helped with the Treasure Chest over the years attended a luncheon that was organized by residents Loraine Cummings and Doris Spencer, along with Catering Events Manager Lina Gentile.

Anne Roberson, who lives at Brooksby Village and has been in show business for years, entertained the group while commemorative pins were passed out to the guests. Pins were later sent to volunteers who were not present. A raffle was held with many items from the Treasure Chest and a grand prize, a necklace handcrafted by Phyllis Papski, a board member, was given to Evelyn Byrd, one of the Treasure Chest’s early volunteers.

“It’s truly a team effort,” said Mary Landry, community resources coordinator at Brooksby Village. “They have all been working together for years to make the Treasure Chest the success it is today.”
