Campus Offers Best Ways to Keep Cool When the Weather Warms Up

By Devon MadisonThe Erickson Tribune

The temperature may be rising, but nobody’s sweating at Brooksby Village. That’s because the community’s multi-million-dollar clubhouse and extensive list of amenities provide countless ways to beat the heat and enjoy the summer months. With such great benefits, you can rest assured—Brooksby is the coolest place around.

Stay Cool at the Pool

At the top of the list is Brooksby’s all-season swimming pool and hot tub. The full-size pool is the perfect place for a quick dip or an extended workout. A wide range of courses are offered throughout the summer, including water walking, water aerobics, and ai chi—a relaxing, pool-based cousin of tai chi that helps increase flexibility and balance.

“It’s great exercise and everyone should take advantage of it at least three times a week,” says Brooksby’s Wellness Coordinator Rick DiScipio. “The water takes stress off the joints, so you can do a lot of range of motion exercises.”

Afterwards you can open the glass doors, lounge poolside, and enjoy a refreshing breeze on the patio.

Get Fit for the Season

Right next door, the Fitness Ccenter is ready to help you stay in top form throughout the summer. Staff members lead organized classes and offer additional support as you bike on Schwinn Airdyne cycles, pump iron with Keiser strength-training equipment, or get a cardiovascular workout on the NuStep machines.

Brooksby’s personal trainers can help you plan an enjoyable and effective session at the gym. Just remember to stay hydrated and drink lots of water!

Stroll in the Sunshine . . .

A daily walk is another great form of exercise, and at Brooksby you can stroll on the beautiful walking trails. Two walking groups meet every week at the Fitness Center: the relaxing Flatlanders Walk and the more challenging Walk This Way group that heads uphill toward neighboring Brooksby Farm.

“The best time to exercise is in the morning to stay out of direct sunlight,” says DiSscipio. To keep comfortable, he recommends that outdoor walkers wear sunscreen, bug repellent, and a proper pair of sunglasses. And again, be sure to take a cool beverage with you.

. . . or Hike in the Halls

When the dog days of summer arrive, you can still get a healthy walk in—and beat the heat by staying completely indoors! Brooksby’s glass-enclosed, climate-controlled walkways connect all buildings on campus. So don’t sweat the sunshine—you can always walk indoors at Brooksby in complete comfort.

Beat High Gas Prices

There’s a lot to do at Brooksby, but you don’t have to stay here to stay cool. Retirement Counselor Marisa Tazzini explains, “You can beat the high summer gas prices by taking advantage of the free scheduled transportation to run errands and go shopping."

You’ll get door-to-door service without the hassles of parking, carrying heavy packages from the store to your car, and save on gas money in the process.

In addition, Brooksby always plans special trips to some of the North Shore’s top attractions. “There’s a lot of history up here, as well as the natural beauty of New England,” says Marisa. “The people who live here want to explore it all!”

Refreshing Fare & Summertime Snacks

All the activities available at Brooksby are guaranteed to work up your appetite. The five on-site restaurants feature menu changes that incorporate refreshing seasonal fare.

“Every summer we include some cold entrée salads on all the menus, and occasionally we will also serve a chilled soup,” says Executive Chef David Chiasson.

And you’ll find the most satisfying summer dessert at The Harvest Grille’s sundae bar. Prepare your favorite dish of soft-serve ice cream—complete with your choice of endless toppings—to cool down at the end of the day. Or, head to the Country Store or McIntosh Market for a cold, tempting treat you can carry home.

Invite Family and Friends

With the sun shining and schools on vacation, the summer season is a great time to entertain visitors at Brooksby. The meticulously landscaped courtyards provide charming picnic areas for the whole family.

And of course, grandchildren always love a chance to splash around in the pool—almost as much as they love the ice cream!

Living at Brooksby gives you exclusive access to all of these benefits, all summer long.
