THE ERICKSON TRIBUNE
What are some of your hobbies and interests?
Joyce: I’m in the Bell Singers; I take tai chi and I’m also in the Sacred Dance Group. We performed at the dedication of the chapel’s stained-glass window.
Dick: I’m in the Brooksby Gentlemen. I was also in the chorus before I was elected to the Resident Advisory Committee. And I have my own program in the TV studio called Then and Now, where I interview residents with distinguished careers. I just interviewed a gentleman who was the commander of the aircraft carrier Shangri-La.
What made you decide to pick a Jackson?
When we looked at the floor plan, we immediately knew we wanted it because it had a double-exposure and large kitchen with a picture window. We like to cook, so we use the kitchen quite often. There are two couples that we enjoy spending time with and we often have dessert together here—we open a bottle of champagne, and bring a few chairs into the kitchen, and just enjoy ourselves.
What is it that you like most about the Jackson?
It would have to be the kitchen—the view and the usability of the kitchen. Plus that frees up the living area. We use it as a sitting room— there is a small desk and a piano in there that overlooks the campus.
Some people have turned their second bedroom into an office or den—have you?
It’s our TV room. It has one reclining chair and a sofa, and we relax in there to watch TV. We’re on the southwest corner and we get beautiful morning sun, and we have sunsets through the west windows.
What do you want people to know about Brooksby?
The clubs and classes here are amazing. We didn’t live around here, and making new friends was very easy—really good friends. There’s a real, genuine sense of community here. If you want to be alone you can do that, but there is so much to do, I can’t imagine a person coming here and not getting involved.
