Downsizing from house to home |
| | Posted on Tuesday, September 30, 2008 | | | By Colleen Rosica THE ERICKSON TRIBUNE
As the personal moving consultant at Ann’s Choice, it is my job to help make the move here as worry-free as possible for new residents.
I am an accredited home staging specialist, as well as a Pennsylvania Realtor, having been in the real estate industry for the past ten years. I joined Ann’s Choice June 17, coming from a real estate company in Doylestown.
My role is to help people make a seamless move from their existing residence to their new home at Ann’s Choice. We have found that, while people reserving a home here at Ann’s Choice are excited about their selection, they often do not know how to prepare for moving. The retirement counselor who has been working with them on reserving their home tells them not to worry because I will be coming to their home to help them downsize, pack, and prepare their house to sell. Knowing that someone is coming to help them move from a house they have often been living in for 40 or more years provides a sense of relief.
Preparing the house for market
The next step after they reserve their home is to meet with me so I can give them all the resources they need to get their old residence on the market. Part of what I do is give our future residents a game plan for downsizing.
Within several weeks of reserving their home at Ann’s Choice, I call to schedule a visit to their house. Together we go room by room to determine what furniture they would like to bring to their new home at Ann’s Choice. Then we measure to make sure each piece will fit in their new floor plan. Once we determine that, they know what furniture they will have to find other homes for; then I provide resources to help. We determine what might be sold, donated, or passed on to family members. | |

During my visit I also refer the future residents to our preferred Realtors, movers, and packers. Because of my real estate background, I can provide excellent references for these services. We also have a list of senior move managers who assist our clients every step of the way on moving day from packing to unpacking.
I also have compiled resources with information about other professionals, such as plumbers, carpenters, and handymen to use in repairing the house if needed. Or if there are hazardous materials in the house that need to be removed, like paint cans, turpentine, pesticides, or things of that nature, I refer the resident to a clean-up professional who handles all those specific types of needs. Luckily, this is the last time they’ll ever need to worry about these maintenance issues!
Time for home maintenance
Our clients have extra peace of mind knowing we recommend professionals we have worked with in the past. It saves them from the uncertainty of randomly picking a name from the yellow pages.
During my visit, I also help stage their existing residence if necessary. This includes tips for preparing their house for the market to make it stand out above and beyond all the others in the area. That might mean helping with furniture placement, taking down photos, removing clutter, changing lighting, and doing everything I can to make the home more desirable to prospective buyers.
All of my services are complimentary to each and every person once they reserve their home here. Usually my in-home meetings take one or two hours, depending on the residents’ needs. Other clients may have a little bit more downsizing to do, and, in that case, I usually follow up with either a series of phone calls or, if necessary, a second visit to see if I can help in some other way.
