At Ann’s Choice, an Erickson retirement community in Bucks County, Pa., just about every resident has his or her own reason for moving in. For some it’s because the community is located near their family. For others it’s to have access to the amenities or the topnotch medical facilities. Still others just love living on the beautiful campus.

“It’s a personal thing,” Retirement Counselor Marie Dmoch says, “and it varies from person to person. But for most people it’s the cumulative result from reading the information kit, touring campus, talking to all the friendly people here, and simply wanting to be part of this great community.”

The right fit
“We knew that wherever we moved, the home we moved to had to have a corner in it that could accommodate a cupboard my husband had built by hand,” Lois Lang says. “And when we saw the Manchester [model] had a corner that could handle it, we knew,” she says. “It was a sign.

“Actually, we decided long ago that a community like Ann’s Choice was probably right for us,” Lang explains. “We had already sold our house a few years ago and were living in a townhouse. We had talked about it and knew we wanted to move here while we are still healthy and can take advantage of all the amenities.”

Lang says, “The real reason we moved here was because we wanted to take walks around campus and in the park next door and use the fitness center.”

After reviewing the information kit and touring the campus, the Langs were ready. “We realized Ann’s Choice was our favorite. We liked everything about it— the whole situation and the whole package. It wasn’t one thing in particular that let us know that Ann’s Choice was right for us; it was truly a mix of everything.”

Lang says with a smile, “We are active people and wanted a place that could keep up with us.”

A place for family
Delia Melograna, a longtime Chestnut Hill resident, says she decided to move to Ann’s Choice because of the beautiful, maintenance-free grounds. She felt her old house was starting to become too hard and expensive to maintain.

“I loved my old house. But it seemed that more and more I had to have  someone come in to help with upkeep. It can be costly to keep up a house for just one person.”

So Melograna began to weigh her options. “Twenty years ago places like Ann’s Choice didn’t exist,” she says. “This wasn’t an option. But Ann’s Choice is great. You don’t have to slow down. I moved here for myself and my children.”

Melograna, like the Langs, chose the two-bedroom Manchester. Melograna says she had her family in mind. “I am a firm believer that there’s nothing more important in life than family. With the extra bedroom, my children and their families can come by to visit and stay the night if they wish. With the extra bathroom right across the hallway, it’s almost like having their own suite.”

Time to unwind
Not having to worry about maintaining her old house has allowed Melograna to spend more time involved with her other interests. “My calendar is full,” she says.

On the days when she’s not participating with the Ann’s Choice Catholic Council or teaching Italian lessons at the Chestnut Hill Senior Center, Melograna enjoys unwinding on her own private patio.

“When I was looking for a new place, I decided it would be nice to be able to walk out my door and step on grass. It’s just so pleasant out there. I try to use my patio as much as possible. I go out to eat breakfast or lunch and then to read a little later. It’s really a mellowing place with the fountain trickling in the background.”

Melograna says moving to Ann’s Choice was a great decision.
