Ann’s Choice will celebrate its fifth anniversary this month.

A number of events are scheduled to honor everyone who lives and works there, but especially those who have lived there since it opened in August 2003.

“Time flies when you’re having fun,” Executive Director Joe LoCascio says. “And this wonderful campus wouldn’t have been possible without our residents. They are the ones who make Ann’s Choice a true community.”

“This celebration is all about the people who live here,” says Retirement Counselor Donna Donohue. “That’s why we are so excited about it. This is five years of our residents living better lives, five years of our residents making new friends, and five years of our residents having great new experiences.”

Life uncomplicated
Anita and Frank Duke were two of only a few residents who moved to Ann’s Choice the week it opened. “I remember the night we first moved in we went to dinner in the Fireside Restaurant. Well it was this great, grand restaurant and only about eight of us in there eating,” Mrs. Duke says with a laugh. “But [the community has] grown so much since then; it’s been fabulous. We’ve just made so many friends here.”

Since moving to Ann’s Choice, the couple has continued their normal lifestyle with some added amenities. “People always ask us what it’s like,” Mrs. Duke says. “And we tell them it’s just like living anywhere else, only you have a ton of extras, whether it’s clubs, activities, or trips you can take advantage of if you want to.”

“They even make it easier for you to travel,” her husband adds. “We love to travel, and now we don’t even have to find a house sitter. It’s life, uncomplicated.”

Making friends … and marriages
Edith and William McLay say, to this day, the camaraderie between each other and the other pioneer residents who moved to Ann’s Choice in 2003 is still strong.

“It was a new experience for all of us,” Mr. McLay says. “We were all new to Ann’s Choice at the same time and had all just moved from our old houses. We had that in common, so we became friends with the other pioneers. That friendship has carried on over the five years we’ve been here.”

He says they continue to meet once a month and celebrate birthdays. “It’s a strong bond we have with each other and all of the other residents who move here,” he says.

Aside from camaraderie and a new place to live, for the McLays, Ann’s Choice was much more. It ended up being the start of a new life together, as the couple was the first at Ann’s Choice to meet and get married at the community.

“It was definitely a good decision to move in,” Mr. McLay says. “I don’t regret it at all.”

His wife adds with a laugh, “After all, we did meet here and get married here.”

Friends are what life’s all about
Another pioneer resident, Doris Fina, moved to Ann’s Choice in September of 2003 and says it was the second happiest day of her life. “Obviously, after my wedding day,” she says with a smile. “But the experience of living at Ann’s Choice has been the best decision I ever made. I wouldn’t trade living here for anything. I love it because I’m a social person, and I’ve made so many good friends here.”

Fina says she loves having so many choices of things to do each day. “From the clubs to the special events that take place in the gardens, my days are full,” she says.

Working as a community ambassador is one of her favorite new activities. “Reaching out to new residents, you get to make a new friend and meet new  faces every day,” she says.

But her involvement at Ann’s Choice has been at one cost: “Going to the  mailbox can be a two-hour event,” she says with a laugh, “because you see so many people.”

Fina says she looks forward to her future at Ann’s Choice and the future of the community. “We love new ideas and new people because that always means the opportunity to make new friends,” she says. “And isn’t that what life is all about?”
