Club tackles making greeting cards

Unique, pretty, and poignant greeting cards are showing up all over the Ann’s Choice campus. But they aren’t being created by greeting card giant Hallmark; they are being hand-made by residents at this popular Warminster community.

The Liberty Belle Crafters at Ann’s Choice are creating cards for every holiday and for every possible feeling or sentiment. All of the proceeds go to the Ann’s Choice Scholarship Fund.

The brainchild of the Red Hat Society, the Liberty Belle Crafters wanted to do a little something extra for the students who work at Ann’s Choice.

“The goal was really to do something philanthropic rather than just eat constantly,” Red Hat member Lynn Swan says with a laugh. “The students [in the restaurants] here work so hard and do so much for us, we figured that the scholarship fund was an appropriate outlet.”

To date, the Liberty Belle Crafters have raised over $1,000 for the scholarship fund.

Creating a card
The cards themselves are regular-size notecards, dressed up with fabric designs cut out and glued to the front. If you can think of a reason to send a card, the Liberty Belle Crafters probably have a card you can send.

“We have holidays like Christmas and Chanukah, New Year’s, Valentine’s Day, patriotic themes, birthdays, and all of the seasons covered,” card maker Betty McQue says. “And then there are animals, like dogs, cats, horses, and frogs. We have them all.”

Being sender-specific
The program has been so popular that the Liberty Belles have started taking requests.

“If someone has a style of card they like, or an idea in mind, the group will consider the request if possible,” Swann says. “It’s really all about finding the right fabric, and we look everywhere for it.”

The local craft stores and craft departments at superstores have the best designs.

“And if we find something that someone likes, we’ll order a bit more if they want us to, but we don’t overdo it,” she adds. “And, of course, no two cards are exactly alike,” McQue says. “Each is as unique as the maker.”

Everyone chips in
The Red Hat Society has more than 30 members at Ann’s Choice and Swan says that most participate in the Liberety Belle Crafters’ good cause. Those that don’t help specifically craft the cards help in other ways like folding, preparing the fabric, selling the cards, advertising, and planning.

The group creates the cards on their own time and even meets once a month to specifically work on the cards. “Just about everyone pitches in, in some way,” McQue says with a smile, “from cutting and gluing fabric to keeping us motivated to do it.”
