It was a break from the ordinary—a warm respite during the cold Philadelphia winter. This past February, 84 Ann’s Choice residents dropped everything, left the comfort of their Warminster homes, and took a cruise to the Caribbean.

Leaving from nearby New York City, the group of travelers enjoyed stops at the tropical destinations of Tortola, St. Thomas, Dominica, Barbados, St. Maarten, and Puerto Rico.

The entire cruise was arranged by the Ann’s Choice Transportation Department.

Tours galore
For experienced cruisers Vince and Mary Ann Peterson, the trip lived up to every expectation. “We’ve been on a number of cruises before, but this one was just phenomenal,” Vince Peterson says.

Some days, the couple split up to pursue their personal interests. Other days, they explored the port cities together. For Mary Ann Peterson and friends, the  trip was chock-full of sightseeing tours, shopping, and local excursions. Her husband’s highlights included a shipwreck snorkel tour and parasailing.

New way of life
For Paul and Bernice Wilson, the cruise was all about seeing new things and meeting new people. They say the different rustic lifestyle of the islands was a favorite. “Dominica isn’t your most metropolitan place, but the people are so friendly and down-to-earth,” Bernice Wilson says. “And Barbados— speak of a beautiful place. The agricultural area, the old charm of the island—it was just so scenic.”

Tips of the trade
Both the Petersons and the Wilsons say they plan on taking more cruises through Ann’s Choice. They offer the following advice for first-timers.

“There is something for everyone,” Vince Peterson says. “You can do as little or as much as you want. But to have the best time, I would recommend going in with an open mind.”

If you’re on a cruise that goes through many ports of call and are worried about making it back to the ship before departure, the Petersons recommend  participating in the ship-sponsored outings instead of venturing out on your own. “They let you see the most interesting things, and if you love it, you can  always go back for more,” Vince Peterson says.

Paul Wilson adds, “The nice thing about a cruise is the variety of things you can do. And if you’re going to the Caribbean, pack light. They are very casual there.”

The Petersons ended every day with a fine meal and a night at the ship’s theatre. “On a cruise everything is different. You can leave your responsibilities behind and immerse yourself in each other and friends. It’s a great vacation experience.”

Making it happen
Ann’s Choice Director of Transportation Gene Karahuta made sure that all aspects of the trip were thought out well in advance and that the travelers’ needs were taken care of.

“It’s not easy making sure that 84 people are prepared for a trip, but I think we did pretty well,” he says.

Paul Wilson says that Karahuta was being modest. “It was extremely convenient,” he says. “The door-to-door transportation was great, and there wasn’t a thing we had to worry about. We’ve cruised before, and it was especially nice not having to deal with the luggage. And having so many people from Ann’s Choice made for a nice, homey environment.”

Other excursions from Ann’s Choice are in the works. Karahuta says the  department has already planned trips to San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Myrtle Beach, and the Baltic Sea. Next year, Ann’s  Choice residents can cruise to the Panama Canal.

“Oh, we’ll be going,” Vince Wilson says. “We wouldn’t miss it.”
