If you have a unique interest, the Speakers Bureau probably has a lecture for you—or they may recruit you to share your expertise.
In its second year of existence, the Ann’s Choice Speakers Bureau coordinates bringing in experts from around the nation and from Ann’s Choice to share their knowledge on a variety of topics.
Averaging one speaker a month, the Speakers Bureau has already had presenters on topics such as Amelia Earhart, Swarovski crystal, Kindertransport, circuses, and the history of the steamboat.
“Each month there’s something different,” says Marie Dmoch, retirement counselor at Ann’s choice. “They are all so different and all so interesting. It seems like every time they host one, the performing arts center is full.”
A ‘team effort’
Founded and run by a group of residents, the new bureau was an offshoot of the community’s entertainment bureau.
“It’s a team effort,” Sue Ross says of helping to organize the bureau. “The Speakers Bureau really handles the public speaking and lecture circuit. From the history talks to those that tug on the heartstrings, it’s hard to say what the favorites have been. Everyone’s interests are different, but we try to promote a wide variety of topics.”
The presenters are determined by availability. “We see what the local colleges are doing and if there are any residents who have something they want to weigh in on,” Ross explains. “The travel logs with people sharing their experiences on trips to other countries have been extremely popular as well,” she says. Already, some residents have shared their experiences from Russia and China.
Getting the word out
The most popular events have brought in almost 200 residents, Ross estimates.
