Residents share Middle Eastern dance and culture with people from Maris Grove

Posted on Tuesday, March 20, 2007

WARMINSTER, PA – Residents and staff at Ann’s Choice performed a Middle Eastern dance recital last week in the community’s Performing Arts Center. In the spirit of the "city of brotherly love," Ann’s Choice welcomed residents from its sister community, Maris Grove in Glen Mills, Pa., who traveled to Warminster to attend the March 15 recital. A reception with Middle Eastern food followed the performance.

After months of studying the culture, food, music, and dance of several countries, the performance was the culmination of a resident dance group that began in March 2006. Led by Resident Life Director Diane Lasichak, the 22 residents who participated in the class studied the culture, dance movements and interpretations of Middle Eastern dance forms in Greece, Lebanon, Turkey, Egypt, and Morocco.

As the residents began to study the dance and the explanation of movement, they were more intrigued by the culture and wanted to see it firsthand. In late July, staff and the group of residents went to Casablanca, an authentic family-run Moroccan restaurant in Warrington, Pa., where they observed male and female Middle Eastern dancers, listened to the music, and enjoyed a traditional Moroccan meal together. The group was invigorated by Casablanca’s hospitality, which enhanced their experience and was carried over into their preparation for the recital.

During each class, Lasichak taught the group about the country, the influences in the movement, the music, and the food of the culture. Each person picked a Middle Eastern name that was reflective of their personality and meaningful to them.

“For many of our residents and staff who participated in the classes, it was their first exposure to the music and culture of the Middle East,” says Lasichak. “Once we got the resident group started, many of our staff also wanted to learn the dances and participate in this intergenerational program with the residents,” she adds.

The 15 employees met weekly beginning at the end of June. Originally, the group only planned to do a small recital for their families but after learning so much about the Middle Eastern culture, they wanted to share their rich experience with the other residents and staff and decided to open the recital up to the Ann’s Choice community. There was so much interest that the recital tickets quickly sold out for two previous performances this past fall. A future trip to Casablanca is also planned so the group can celebrate together everything they have learned to complete their cultural experience. (Lauren Campione)
