Bob and Carol Unger of Willow Grove, Pa., passed on moving to Ann’s Choice once before. Looking back, they wish they had moved earlier.

According to Bob, back in 2004 they had selected a perfect home—a Harrison—that faced the courtyard.

“We were very excited. It had lots of big bay windows that let light in every room. We had even picked out the cabinets, flooring and everything for the apartment,” Bob recalls. “We told Marie Dmoch, Ann’s Choice retirement counselor, that we were ready to move. Then when we got home and after a lengthy discussion, we passed on the opportunity.”

Bob was 67 then and Carol, 64. He says he felt they were too young to move to a retirement community. But in the back of his mind, he felt they might regret it. As luck would have it, this past spring Bob and Carol toured new Morris Square in the new Liberty Commons neighborhood and saw another Harrison.

“At that time we had planned on waiting till August, but I told Carol, ‘If we let this go, we could be really sorry.’ We decided we didn’t want to risk losing out again. So this time we said, ‘yes!’ and we are so happy we did.”

By April they were all moved in. “You don’t usually get a second chance like that, so we felt very fortunate,” says Bob.

“I told the Ungers how lucky they were to find another home like the first,”says Marie. “I’m sorry to say, but most of the time when people pass on a home, they never find another quite like it. That’s why I always say, ‘Don’t wait!’”

A Sound Financial Deal

Needless to say there are a lot of communities available in the Bucks County area. But Bob and Carol felt Ann’s Choice made the most financial sense and offered the best value.

“We like the idea that if we ever decided to move, we’d get our money back and if we live the rest of our lives here, the money will go to our estate,” says Bob. “That’s an incredible and unique feature. Plus, the monthly service package included so many things and was $1,000 or so less than other communities we researched. It was a tremendous value.”

They also felt right at home in the community. “We have some good friends at our church who were living at Ann’s Choice and convinced us to look into it,” he says. “We went to a few events before we joined the Priority List and continued to stay in touch.”

The Ungers even visited another Erickson community, Seabrook in New Jersey, to view their Renaissance Gardens, a long-term health care facility that Ann’s Choice will soon be building to compliment its full-service Medical Center. “We wanted to make sure if we needed long-term care as we got older that the facility was top notch. It was!”

So Much to Do!

On top of the positive financial and health care aspects of Anns’ Choice, Bob and Carol have already gotten acclimated to the community’s opportunity-rich environment.

“I’ve been into woodworking for the past 6-10 years and this wood shop here blows away the one I had back in our old house,”says Bob. The recipient of his latest project? “I just built a hobby horse for my granddaughter’s ninth birthday,” he smiles. “In fact, she recently asked Carol, ‘Mom-Mom, can I  move here when I’m 62?’ There’s little doubt that our kids and grandchildren love this place too.”

The Ungers have also joined a pinochle club, genealogy club, plus the trip and travel club. “We also do a lot of volunteering,” Bob says. “It’s great to give back. In addition to having a great time, everyone here really cares about people and lending a helping hand.”

Bob inadvertently helped market the place recently. “Every  Wednesday they have events where people come to tour Ann’s Choice,” he says. “We were walking down past a group when I heard this one gentlemen say, ‘I couldn’t move here, this place is too busy.’ I told him, ‘If you move here you’ll never regret it.’ We only wish we had moved sooner! The truth is, you can be as busy as you want to be here. You can relax and do a couple of things a day or stay busy every hour of every day. We’re so happy we got a second chance to move here. It’s home now!”
