A Day in the Life of the Bradleys

Posted on Saturday, April 01, 2006

We asked Ann’s Choice residents Al and Grace Bradley what a typical day in an Erickson community was like for them and they said, “Busy!”

“We have a lot of things going on every day,” says Al. “We moved here because we really love having an active lifestyle. But the great thing about Ann’s Choice is you can be as busy as you want to be. Some days we might decide to just take it easy and enjoy a relaxing lunch and an afternoon swim.”

Most Days Filled with Activities

“We get up early and enjoy having breakfast in our apartment. We have a nice kitchen, so it’s easy to sit back and read the morning paper and plan out that day’s events.”

For example, on Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m., the Bradleys have Bible class. Wednesdays, it’s their book club. On Thursday mornings they attend a model railroad class. “I built the model rail set in the clubhouse,” says Al. “I’m also treasurer of that club as well as a few others.”

Usually around midday, the Bradleys will have lunch and go either to the  pool or Fitness Center. “Sometimes, we’re too busy, but we try to exercise every day,” he says.

In the afternoon there are plenty of special committees and subcommittees the Bradleys are involved in. “My background is banking, so I’m part of the Finance Committee, which is a subcommittee of the Resident Activities Committee. This liaison between residents and various departments is one of the many “voices” residents have in Erickson communities to enhance the overall culture and lifestyle.

“Even Fridays are busy,” says Al. “I spend two hours every Friday afternoon singing in the chorus.”

Helping Hands

On top of helping to enrich the Erickson experience for all residents, the Bradleys raise spiritual awareness as well. Al belongs to the Protestant Council, while Grace is a member of the Ecumenical Council which unites all the different faiths in the community.

“We’ve always been a spiritual couple and we believe it’s important to help as many people as we can. We get great joy from helping people.”

That includes being part of “Helping Hands” that buys groceries and runs errands for people unable to do so. They’re part of a prayer group that prays for people going through various physical and mental difficulties.

“We also help Ann’s Choice through the Ambassador program,” says Al. “We meet with people who are considering moving to an Erickson community and we help answer their questions about what this experience is like.”

Meet People, Pursue Passions Without Worry

The Bradleys even started a “meet-yourneighbors” dinner night where they rent out the music room and have dinner with people from “the other side of the hall” that they might not know as well. “Having dinner with someone really gives you the opportunity to get to know them.”

“Ann’s Choice gives you the opportunity to do more because you don’t have to worry about maintenance or anything like that,” says Al. “Normally, we wouldn’t have time to do all these things, but Ann’s Choice makes it easy to pursue your passions like travel.”

When not doing just about everything in the community they love, the Bradleys head down to Ocean City, New Jersey, where they have a condo that they share with their children.

“It’s worth it,” says Al, “We can be as busy as we want, but anytime we want to get out of town we have a place to go and no lawn or upkeep to worry at home.”

Now that’s spending your time wisely.
