Ann’s Choice continues to be Bucks County’s most sought-after community for people 62-plus for many reasons. But, perhaps none are more important than the quality of its comprehensive health and wellness program: Erickson HealthSM, the nation’s largest integrated wellness and health network for people 62-plus.

The leader of Ann’s Choice Medical Center is Dr. John Marcelis, an experienced geriatric physician who has been providing on-site care for the growing community since it opened in August 2003.

Before joining Ann’s Choice, Marcelis had a stateof- the-art geriatric practice for 11 years that was part of the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Medicine.

“Ann’s Choice and Erickson HealthSM provide an innovative approach to health and wellness,” says Marcelis. “Like Erickson’s, my approach has always been focused on wellness. For example, Medicare is built on a providers’ incentive to take care of those who are sick. We take the opposite approach. Our program is designed with the incentive of keeping people healthy.”

How Does Ann’s Choice Do It?

Marcelis says that Ann’s Choice is designed to keep you healthy and happy yearround. “Even in the cold winter months you can stay fit,” he says. He points to amenities such as the expansive, indoor walkways that connect all buildings, and the fully staffed Fitness Center and indoor pool.

“I love the fact that in the winter I can swim and watch snow falling outside,” says Raymond Good.

For many residents, that’s just the tip of the, well, iceberg.

There also are plenty of opportunities to stay mentally refreshed. In addition to the often-listed amenities, residents can take classes, join clubs, hold “town” meetings, meet visiting politicians, volunteer, enjoy live performances.

“It’s all part of the innovative approach,” says Maracelis. “It’s all about total wellness.”

So, how good is it to have an on-site physician like Dr. Marcelis? Mary McCalla has one word to describe it.

“It’s wonderful. And Dr. Marcelis is wonderful,” she says. “He’s very knowledgeable and he really listens to whatever is on your mind. Sometimes you go to the doctors and you feel rushed, like you only have so many minutes to meet. Dr. Marcelis never makes you feel that way. He always answers all your questions and truly cares about you. I tell him, ‘Do you know how wonderful you are?’ and he laughs and says, ‘Now, I do.’”

In addition to Marcelis’ excellent bedside manner, residents benefit by sheer convenience. Not only is the Medical Center within walking distance through climatecontrolled walkways, so are the pharmacists.

“It’s great,” says Mary, “I can go pick up my mail and my prescription at the same time.”

Says another Erickson resident: “I like having everything under one roof . . . the Fitness Center, the all-season swimming pool and spa, and the Medical Center are all on-campus.”

“The big thing we have here is time to get to know patients and the resources to maintain their good health,” Marcelis says. “It’s an interdisciplinarian approach with multiple members of a team with specific expertise. We’ve got physicians and nurses, social services, resident life, 24/7 emergency response service on campus, the Fitness Center, spiritual and living services, nutritional services, plus our on-site pharmacy. All of these different facets come together to build this network of services to keep people healthy.”
