Now that you’ve retired, what’s next?

THE ERICKSON TRIBUNE

For many, retirement is a time to pursue dreams; a time to travel, volunteer, try new things, and enjoy the company of family and friends.

The reality, however, is not always as rosy as the dream. After enjoying a few months of freedom, many retirees find themselves asking, “What’s next?”

Figuring out what to do with your retirement is a process, says Sherry Parrish, director of resident life at Erickson’s Charlestown community in Catonsville, Md.

“From the time you are little, you always know what’s next. After first grade comes second grade. After high school is college, the military, or a job,” she says. “When you fall in love, at least one of you is asking, ‘What’s next?’ It’s all one step in front of the other … and then we retire and except for the fact that, hopefully, you put some money aside, almost no one plans for the social and psychological implications of what’s next at this stage.”

What’s next?
We’ve all known people who, without a clear path to follow, find themselves overwhelmed and instead of jumping onto a new path, retreat to the sofa in front of the TV set. With any luck, all those late-life couch potatoes will tune into Retirement Living’s new lifestyle makeover show—aimed squarely at them. What’s Next? is all about making the second half of life as dynamic and fulfilling as the first half.

Each episode profiles someone over the age of 55 who, for one reason or another, is stuck. Experts offer advice on health and wellness, learning new skills, relationships, volunteer and career opportunities, and just generally give people tools to create a life filled with meaning and joy.

Starting the process is daunting, as guests are encouraged to step outside their comfort zone and try something new.

Outside the comfort zone
Taking that step isn’t easy—as the host of the program, Sherry Parrish, can attest. Television is a completely new endeavor for Parrish and one she never even considered for herself. Like so many things that are simply “meant to be,” Parrish was in the right place at the right time.

Producer Debbie Jacobson was working on another RLTV program and had the chance to connect with Parrish at Charlestown on several occasions. Like just about everyone who meets Parrish, Jacobson was bowled over by Parrish’s exuberant personality and no-nonsense approach to problem solving.

When it came time to fill the position of host for What’s Next? Jacobson says, “There was no other person on the table for me.” When offered the job of hosting What’s Next? Parrish’s reaction was, “I’m short, fat, and 54. I’m a hillbilly. What are these people thinking and what do they want from me?”

What they wanted, says Jacobson, was the whole package. Parrish is the real deal. Her 13 years at Charlestown help her understand what guests on What’s Next? are going through and her infectious enthusiasm makes it hard for them to resist trying at least some of the things she suggests.

The parallel between what she asks guests to do and her own unlikely new career path isn’t lost on Parrish. “I jumped into the unknown— and as I was doing that, I thought to myself—‘Is this not what the show is all about?’” she says. “So it’s an adventure for me too.”

Let’s go!
Parrish is the driving force (literally) behind what makes the program work. At the start of each episode, she gets behind the wheel of the Retirement Living RV and heads out to meet someone who needs a boost.

The pilot episode focuses on Rich, a retired machine worker from Chicago. When Rich is first introduced, he is clearly in a rut. Parrish and her experts try to engage Rich in new things. He resists at first, but their persistence sends Rich down a new path that includes exercise, re-discovering old hobbies, and volunteering.

By the end of the show, Rich’s outlook is completely turned around.

Unlike other reality makeover programs, What’s Next? guests and their issues are treated with the utmost compassion and respect—a directive that Parrish says comes from John Erickson, founder and CEO of Erickson Retirement Communities and RLTV. “It’s my responsibility to see that people have the highest possible quality of life,” Parrish says. “It’s a makeover of spirit—saying, ‘Take a deep breath, babe, the rest of your life is in front of you. Let’s go!’”
